At the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Annual Convention in Las Vegas, NV, the Building Division by acclimation elected Douglas Maibach as Chairman for 2017-2018. Doug is Chairman of Barton Malow Enterprises and Executive Vice President of Barton Malow Company in Southfield, Michigan. He is a very active leader in local community and industry organizations.

Lean construction methods in the building industry have focused largely on coordinating work between various trades and eliminating conflict through more productive communication and coordination. Although these concepts are important in all construction work, horizontal contractors self-perform more work and build in a more linear fashion, resulting in a greater need to improve performance within its own operations. In many ways horizontal construction is more like manufacturing than building construction.
Applications for the 2016 Outstanding Student Chapter Contest have been accepted and 91¶ÌÊÓƵ of America received applications from exceptional Student Chapters across the country! Each of the Student Chapters demonstrated a strong portfolio showing dedication to their community and public service projects. Three applications in particular stood out from the others and 91¶ÌÊÓƵ of America is happy to announce the first, second and third place winners of the 2016 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Outstanding Student Chapter Contest:
Sundt Senior Vice President and Texas District Manager Eric Hedlund has been named to the Arizona State University School of Sustainable Engineering and Built Environment Hall of Fame. He will be inducted Feb. 3.

Contract document comparisons typically include ConsensusDocs and the American Institute of Architect (AIA) contract documents as the most used in the industry. ConsensusDocs staff, an 91¶ÌÊÓƵ member, and a board member of Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) have teamed up to create a comparison of design-build standard contracts that will be presented at the DBIA National Convention as well as Construction Superconference in December.
The Business Development Forum Steering Committee continues to bring more BD resources and best practices to the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ membership. A section has been added to the Business Development Forum webpage titled Business Development Best Practices. The goal is to continue to develop this section of the website so it is your one stop for information regarding all things Business Development.
The Collaboration Chronicles are an ongoing effort by the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Public/Private Industry Advisory Council (PIAC), the AIA-91¶ÌÊÓƵ Joint Committee and the Construction Owners Association of America (COAA) to capture and share the results from successful project collaborations.
A great crowd participated in 91¶ÌÊÓƵ BuildCon 2016 held October 18-19, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta in Atlanta, GA. The event brought together 140 high-level leaders in the building construction industry where they gained first-hand knowledge and insight from industry peers on the risk and benefits of utilizing Design-Assist and BIM; improving their organization’s project delivery approaches, Lean strategies and Business Development practices.
